PENNEYWELL FARM
A visit to multi award winning Pennywell Farm is packed full of animals, activities, shows and displays. It’s the biggest activity farm in the South West and there’s something new happening every hour, just listen for the bell.
See for yourself why Pennywell has been awarded Best Visitor Attraction in the Devon Tourism Awards for the 2nd consecutive year! Your visit begins with a warm welcome in the main farmyard where you can have a look at the activity board to see what’s going on. Take a snap on your smartphone to make sure you don’t miss a single thing! Then you can join in with fabulous farm activities like goat milking, ferret racing, deer feeding, egg collecting and much, much more.
Home to the world famous Pennywell Miniature pigs, we promise that you will never have experienced anything quite like the phenomenon that is Pennywell pig racing. Come and cheer on your favourite porker in this truly unique event.
Hundreds of friendly farm animals, equines and pets are waiting to meet you. You’ll find alpacas, goats and goat kids, lambs, and highland cattle as you explore the farm. If you like equines, you’ll love Pennywell as we have everything from mighty heavy horses to miniature ponies, plus a family of miniature donkeys who just love attention from the visitors. Connery, a retired horse from the Household Cavalry enjoys a chat as you go by and there are plenty of pretty ponies.
Say, “Hello, Halo, Merhaba or Bonjour” to our international collection of poultry in the Funky Fowl area of the farm and meet Guinea pigs, ducklings, rabbits and tortoises in the pet’s area.
Pond dipping is always popular so take a net and discover the wonderful wildlife that lives beneath or you can wander down to the tranquil fishponds to feed the fish.
Farmyard rides are brought to you, courtesy of tractor power. All ages will enjoy the Tractor and Trailer ride or you could bounce around the track on the Red Rocket ride (6+ to adult) which we guarantee will leave you with a smile on your face. Challenge your friends on the Run Rabbit Go Carts (8+ to adult) or take a more leisurely ride on the Rainbow Railway which is great fun for all the family.
Budding young farmers can test their driving skills in the Pennywell Tractor Village and toddlers have their very own play village to explore. If there is any excess energy left to burn there are plenty of trampolines dotted around the farm, Crazy Golf and for the really energic there is an assault course which is great for mums and dads too! The fantastic news is that all this is included in the admission price.
Plenty of coffee and snack stops as well as light meals, cakes, ice creams and delicious Devon cream teas ensure that there is something for everyone.
BUCKLAND ABBEY
Buckland Abbey was the last Cistercian abbey built in England and Wales. In the 16C it became an Elizabethan mansion and, later on, a family home. It was restored after a fire in 1938. Particular points of interest are the 14C barn, the Four Lives Gallery running the full length of the original nave, the Drake Gallery, added in the 1570s, the impressive Great Hall with its fine plasterwork, and the kitchen with its coal-fired brick ovens.
DARTMOOR ZOO
In 2006 the Mee family purchased the struggling Dartmoor Wildlife Park, reopening as Dartmoor Zoo in 2007. Zoo Director, Benjamin Mee recorded the family’s story in his book, “We Bought a Zoo” which was made into a movie of the same name starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson in 2012.
Set in 33 acres of beautiful woodland just 20 minutes from Plymouth, Dartmoor Zoo features the largest collection of Big Cats in the region including African Lions, Amur Tigers, Jaguar and Cheetah. Visitors will also find Iberian Wolves, European Brown Bears, South American Tapir, Ostrich, Meerkats, Otters, Monkeys and much more.
Immerse yourself in a fun day out with the kids: see the big cats feed, hear the wolves howl and feel the snakes wriggle through your fingers in Close Encounters.
Follow the daily timetable of events including public talks at feeding times and animal encounters, with falconry displays and kids activities during the holidays such as quiz-trails and face-painting. And when you need a rest, visit the Jaguar Restaurant for a freshly prepared lunch or a hot drink and delicious cake made right here on site.
The zoo is open all year round (with the exception of Christmas Day) and hosts large picnic and outdoor play areas.
Beaches
Wembury Beach (National Trust)
The delightful beach at Wembury is set in a cove, backed by low rise cliffs and has lots to offer beachgoers. Behind the beach, the gently rolling Devon hills and pretty Wembury Church provide a picturesque backdrop whilst the beach itself is mainly sand, although there are some areas of rocks and shingle. At low tide a good-sized expanse of clean sand is revealed.
Apart from the picturesque setting, what makes this beach stand out is the spectacular shore life to be found here. This is one of the best rockpooling destinations in the country. Explorers have a good chance of finding crabs, sea anemones, limpets, starfish, pipe fish, sea scorpions and green sea-urchins among the rockpools. The best time to come here to explore the rockpools is just before low tide, so check tidal tables to get the most out of your visit. There are organized rock pool rambles run by the National Trust, who manage the area, and also by Wembury Marine Centre.
The water quality here is excellent and the relatively shallow waters of the cove make it a popular place to paddle and play in the waves. Children will need to be properly supervised as there is no lifeguard though.
From the beach there are views over the Mewstone, a rocky island with a distinctive triangular shape. In past time the island was used as a refuge for smugglers and even as a prison. The island is now owned by the National Trust and used as a bird sanctuary. Visitors are not permitted. During the summer months, basking sharks are sometimes spotted in the waters around the rock.
Mothecombe Beach
Mothecombe is at the mouth of the Erme Estuary on the south coast of Devon. It is a remote sandy bay, approximately 330 metres wide, backed by sand dunes and cliffs. A stream flows onto the beach to the sea.
The beach is privately owned and maintained by the Flete Estate and has remained completely unspoilt, with the only buildings being an old boathouse and the lime kiln. Access to the beach is restricted out of season.
Within the car park there is a café/restaurant - The School House, serving fresh fish amongst other things.
South West Coastal Path
The South West Coast Path is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail. It stretches for 630 miles, running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset.

The Ship Inn, Noss Mayo
Award winning waterside pub has been completely renovated using reclaimed materials, English oak, local stone, and lots of love and affection. The style is strong yet simple, spacious yet cosy; it feels like a proper pub, unfussy, uncomplicated but pleasingly functional.
Enjoy good, fresh, homemade food, great beers and interesting wines, whilst surrounded by wooden floors, old furniture, log fires, bookcases and dozens of local pictures. We also love beer and our cellar has a good range of regional and local beers, most from brewers that know us well. When you know who brewed it somehow it tastes better! Our main beer comes from Summerskill’s just down the road, supported by beers from Princetown Breweries on Dartmoor and others who share our pleasure in beer.
